Share FacebookTwitterPinterestLinkedinWhatsappTelegramEmail 4.4K Amaarae, the Ghanaian-American artist celebrated for her avant-garde fashion and genre-defying music, has recently taken noticeable steps to connect more deeply with her Ghanaian roots. This shift is evident in her performances and public engagements, signaling a potential reevaluation of her relationship with her Ghanaian audience. Her breakout hit, “SAD GIRLZ LOVE MONEY,” especially the remix featuring Moliy and Kali Uchis, achieved significant international success. The track debuted at No. 80 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking the first entry for both Amaarae and Moliy. It became the most streamed female remix in Spotify history, reached No. 1 on Spotify’s Global Viral chart, TikTok U.S. Top Tracks, and Shazam U.S. chart. The remix was certified Platinum in the U.S., signifying over a million units sold, and it has surpassed 500 million streams on Spotify. Many Ghanaians, outside of the entertainment industry, were unaware of her, even if they recognized the chorus of her hit song. Her music, fashion, and accent didn’t align with traditional Ghanaian norms, which may have contributed to this disconnect. Recently, however, there appears to be a strategic shift. At Coachella, Amaarae incorporated Ghanaian hit songs into her performance, preceding her own tracks. Her upcoming album is titled black star and she changed her profile icon to a black star, referencing the Ghanaian flag. In interviews, she’s addressed the lack of patronage from Ghanaians, suggesting a newfound emphasis on her heritage. Is this a calculated move to expand her fan base to Ghana? While it’s commendable to embrace one’s heritage, the timing and manner of this shift needs to be analyzed, could her support in the west be declining? In a podcast with Thelma Wright, Amaarae’s mother discussed the harshness of Ghanaian social media towards her daughter, at which insinuates Amaarae was a victim to the Ghanaian public. Something that would easily arouse sympathy. Which tends to be the tone of discussions amongst her interviews, and tweets. Her music and image were tailored more towards international markets, possibly contributing to the initial disconnect. As Amaarae navigates this new phase, her accolades are one that could be championed, however it remains to be seen how her future music will resonate with Ghanaian fans. Authenticity and consistent engagement will be key in bridging the gap and fostering a deeper connection with her roots. The question is, is Ghana really ready for all the nudity, sexual innuendoes, and drug promoting lifestyle that will come with Amaarae being a popular and hailed figure in Ghana, or would it be embraced for her Coachella performance/achievement.
