Dirty December just got a gritty new twist with its Galamsey rendition. For those unfamiliar, Dirty December is a term coined by Ghanaians abroad, used to describe their lavish celebrations back home during the Christmas season. After enduring challenges and discrimination in the West, these returnees bask in luxury, taking advantage of the favorable currency exchange rate. From endless parties to hopping between clubs, they often enjoy the best of what Ghana has to offer—without contributing much to the nation’s welfare before jetting back overseas.

However, many of these individuals ignore the pressing issues faced by locals, particularly the devastating effects of galamsey—illegal gold mining. Galamsey is ravaging the country, with the process involving toxic chemicals like mercury that are used to extract gold from the land. This mercury cannot easily be separated from the environment, leading to widespread contamination of water sources and food supplies.

This year, the looming crisis of galamsey is unavoidable, even for the wealthiest returning Ghanaians. No matter how far removed one may feel, the environmental impact is pervasive. liquid mercury used to seeth the gold from the land is one that can not be easily separated and is currently destroying not only the waters but the food as well.

AI artist Kwesi Hayford (@qkwecy on Instagram) has created powerful images reflecting the ironic disconnect. Rather than focusing on the typical images of protestors or miners, Kwesi has chosen to depict Dirty December partiers immersed in brown, polluted waters and bottles of cognac labeled with galamsey warnings. His hilarious yet serious visual representations highlight the absurdity of ignoring the destruction galamsey is wreaking on the nation while treating Ghana as merely a party destination.
