“Law Enforcement Must Identify the Two Miscreants” – Sam George Slams Viral LGBTQ+ Photos at Independence Arch as Ghanaians Accuse Couple of Chasing Clout

A recent set of viral photos featuring South African gay couple Rue and Lue kissing under Ghana’s revered Independence Arch has sparked widespread outrage — not only from political figures like MP Sam George, but also from everyday Ghanaians who feel the act was less about love and more about provoking public backlash for attention.

 

The couple, dressed in coordinated red ensembles, were seen embracing beneath one of Ghana’s most iconic national monuments. But while the images quickly made rounds on social media, they’ve left many in Ghana with a sour taste.

To many Ghanaians, this wasn’t a protest or a cultural statement — it was a calculated move to stir controversy and attract engagement online. The location, symbolic to Ghana’s fight for independence and national pride, made the act feel less like a celebration of identity and more like a deliberate provocation.

Among the most vocal critics was Hon. Sam George, MP for Ningo-Prampram, who didn’t hold back his disapproval.

“I have seen numerous tags and posts about the abhorrent disrespect of our culture and values by two ‘useless’ individuals,” he wrote. “The disrespect of our national symbols is despicable to say the least.”

Sam George also directed criticism at former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for failing to pass the controversial Family Values Bill, which sought to restrict LGBTQ+ promotion in Ghana. Though the bill was passed by Parliament, it was never signed into law during Akufo-Addo’s tenure.

 

“We are where we are today without a strict legislation on these ills because former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo failed and blatantly refused to sign the Family Values Bill into law,” he stated.

The MP confirmed that the bill has been re-submitted and approved for a first reading. He vowed to push for its passage under a future NDC administration, urging President Mahama to endorse it when passed again.

Ghanaians on social media have echoed Sam George’s sentiments, with many arguing that the couple’s kiss was less about LGBTQ+ rights and more about exploiting Ghana’s cultural sensitivity to gain viral traction. The feeling among a large portion of the public is that the couple chose the Independence Arch — not just as a landmark — but as bait for controversy.

“It’s not just that they kissed, it’s where and how they did it. They knew this would anger Ghanaians and they did it for the attention,” one user commented on Twitter.

Sam George concluded his remarks with a firm call to action:

“Law enforcement must identify the two miscreants in the viral photos and apply the full rigours of existing laws on them. For God and Country.”

As Parliament gears up to debate the reintroduced Family Values Bill, the Independence Arch incident has reignited discussions around LGBTQ+ visibility, freedom of expression, and cultural boundaries in Ghana — raising questions not just about what’s legal, but what’s respectful.
