There is a lot of speculation and propaganda centered around Uganda’s new LGBTQ. Most of the reports are fear tactics and stories to feed into the West’s narrative to promote homosexuality and transgender culture around the world.
Upon researching various articles published by BBC, CNN and other reports, many ignite fear in reaction to a new Ugandan bill but none has actually cited any clauses that threaten the livelihood of homosexuals in Uganda.
The new legislation constitutes a further crackdown on LGBTQ+ in a country where same-sex relations are already illegal but doesn’t signify any torture of homosexuals themselves. However, it targets an array of activities that involve promoting and abetting homosexuality.
Reuters reported that opposition lawmaker Asuman Basalirwa introduced the Anti Homosexuality Bill 2023 to parliament, saying that the bill aims to “protect our church culture; the legal, religious and traditional family values of Ugandans from the acts that are likely to promote sexual promiscuity in this country.”
“The objective of the bill was to establish a comprehensive and enhanced legislation to protect traditional family values, our diverse culture, our faiths, by prohibiting any form of sexual relations between persons of the same sex and the promotion or recognition of sexual relations between persons of the same sex.”
The bill is expected to eventually go to Ugandan president, Yoweri Museveni, for assent. Museveni last week derided homosexuals as “deviants.”
According to President Museveni “Nobody concentrates on homosexuals, nobody is hunting them, but because they want to force us to say homosexuality is ‘OH YEH’, that’s why they get the backlash.”
He further stressed in the interview “Homosexuality is deviants from the normal, there is the normal and there is the deviation from the normal, but you don’t kill! The deviation from the normal is also part of nature”
“You can have someone born with 6 fingers instead of five, you can’t kill him, but then you don’t go around and say the deviation is normal.”
In order to further tarnish and criminalize acts of Uganda as inhumane, headlines referred to 2009 when Uganda introduced an anti-homosexuality bill that included a death sentence for gay sex, and merged its clauses with current propaganda to denounce the recent bill passed in Uganda.
The 2009 bill was later replaced with another in 2014, lessoning homosexuality from the death penalty to life in prison.
It is inexcusable to bring harm to any individual due to their choices and lifestyle that is nonharmful to others. However, there is no concrete report that the new bill chastizes homosexuals. What is concrete so far is it criminalizes anyone who identifies with the LGBTQ community, which has no relevance to a political state but instead an organization that has proven to further enhance and promote homosexuality.
The United Nations and the NGO Amnesty International on Wednesday called on Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to reject the laws passed by parliament Tuesday night, calling it “appalling”, but they are yet to act on the Arab countries doing so and slavery of black people in Libya.
