Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traoré Expresses Gratitude Following Global Solidarity Marches Against U.S. General Michael Langley

On April 30, 2025, thousands of demonstrators across Africa and the diaspora rallied in support of Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, following accusations by U.S. General Michael Langley. In response, President Traoré issued a heartfelt message thanking supporters for their solidarity.

“I would like to express my gratitude to all the peace-loving, freedom-loving patriots and pan-Africanists who rallied around the world on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, to support our commitment and our vision for a new Burkina Faso and a new Africa, free from imperialism and neo-colonialism,” he stated.

President Traoré emphasized that the demonstrations reinforced the government’s resolve:

“Your active solidarity and this demonstration of sympathy strengthen our conviction that the fight we are waging for a fairer and more equitable world is justified.”

He further declared, “We will never bend our backs in the face of adversity; we will stand firm until our peoples are truly emancipated. With you, we are certain that victory over the forces of evil is at hand.”

The protests were sparked by comments from General Langley, head of the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), who, during an April 3 Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, accused President Traoré of misusing Burkina Faso’s gold reserves for personal security rather than national benefit.

These allegations were met with widespread criticism across Africa, with many viewing them as an example of Western interference in African affairs. Demonstrators in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso’s capital, and other cities chanted slogans supporting President Traoré and denouncing neo-colonialism.

President Traoré concluded his message with a call for continued unity:

“Together, in solidarity, we will defeat imperialism and neo-colonialism for a free, dignified, and sovereign Africa.”

The events underscore a growing sentiment among African nations advocating for self-determination and resistance to external influence.
