Rwandan fashion house Matheo Designs has unveiled its latest collection, Rebirth of Rwanda: Chap II – Ibanga ry’Amaraso (The Secret of Blood), a poignant tribute to the nation’s journey through tragedy and resilience. Founded in 2020 by visionary designer Maurice Niyigena, Matheo Designs is renowned for its Afrofuturistic approach, seamlessly blending traditional African narratives with avant-garde fashion.

The collection’s accompanying video opens with a harrowing scene: a man, symbolizing Rwanda, subjected to a brutal assault by multiple figures. This powerful imagery reflects the nation’s painful history. The narrative then shifts to a solitary individual lighting a candle, whose flame is used to ignite others—a metaphorical nod to artistic expression. Models draped in white garments, adorned with red scribbles and beads, evoke images of mourning and the indelible stains of bloodshed, symbolizing the collective memory of loss and the enduring spirit of the Rwandan people.
