Pontiff passes away just a day after Easter appearance

POPE FRANCIS has died aged 88 – just hours after appearing in public on Easter Sunday in a wheelchair.

The Vatican confirmed the Pope passed away on Easter Monday morning following years of ill health, including a recent fight with double pneumonia that saw him hospitalised for five weeks.

The beloved pontiff – the first ever from Latin America – was last seen on the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica, delivering a brief message to tens of thousands before handing over the traditional blessing to an archbishop.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he made history in 2013 by becoming the first non-European Pope in more than 1,200 years.

His death marks the end of a papacy that broke boundaries – championing the poor, challenging power, and pushing reforms that ruffled feathers in the Vatican.

Tributes poured in from world leaders and religious figures alike. King Charles said he was “deeply saddened”, while the Archbishop of York called him a “holy man of God”.

US President Donald Trump posted: “Rest in peace Pope Francis! May God bless him and all who loved him!”

Francis’s body will lie in the Vatican’s Domus Sanctae Marthae before a conclave is called to elect the next Pope in the coming weeks.
