In spite of the unfortunate circumstances arising from the recent COVID-19 pandemic, there is a new fashion brand that has recently been birthed in the city of Tema. The inception of the clothing brand was propelled by the desire to realize a childhood dream. In fact, founder, Nadia Otoo took advantage of the lockdown period to fully establish the clothing brand titled ‘The Dressmakers GH’. The Dressmakers GH is a new female clothing brand eventually seeking to expand its clientele base to males and children in the near future. Like many contemporary brands that embrace modern African and Ghanaian culture, this one seems to have coined it’s identity by mainly utilizing African print chiffon and silk to create its unique designs. She holds a BA in Sociology and an LLB but has currently put on hold pursuing the professional law certification to pursue a new path in fashion. As a matter of fact, the optimism surrounding the current status of the brand supersedes the devastating economic realities most companies are experiencing during this pandemic. According to her “The African culture is now very much appreciated worldwide today, particularly with the recent introduction of African designers to the world through Beyonce’s visual album (Black is King) and more. Africans have always been colorful, vibrant, and expressive. There is now a taste for the African sense of fashion that is being acquired worldwide” The brand is currently working to establish a clientele base with anyone who loves timeless style pieces that emulate the cultural roots of African fashion with modern trends. Below are some of their garments from their debut collection. We wish them all the best on this new journey. Check out more of their work on Instagram @thedressmakers_gh UPCOMING TOP EVENTS!
