Angolan-born newcomer Maria Borges tops FORBES AFRICA magazine’s African model list for 2013. Born in 1992, the Portuguese speaking beauty has launched her career with 39 appearances on the runway, including Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs. Borges has proved to be the most wanted African run-way queen of 2013.

The new face of FORBES AFRICA’s Top African model list left fashionistas speechless at the New York Fashion Week where only 6% of the models in the show were of African ethnicity. The 20 year-old looks to the likes of Naomi Campbell for inspiration.

fgmaria3Running up the list are two models who featured high last year – Ajak Deng and Grace Bol. FORBES AFRICA?s top rank last year, Zimbabwean-born Nyasha Matonhodze, has dropped nineteen places in the highly competitive industry. As they say on the runway, in fashion one day you’re in and then next you’re out. Among the movers and shakers to make the list, are South African lingerie model Candice Swanepoel, Ethiopian Liya Kebede, new comer Katryn Kruger and Miss Universe competitor Flaviana Matata.

Somalian beauty, Iman Abdulmajid first hit the modelling scene in 1975 after being discovered by photographer, Peter Beard. She ultimately became the first African model to appear on the cover of German Vogue, Iman paved the way for all African-born beauties wanting to break into the high fashion-world. Almost 40 years later, models in Africa are seizing their moment, 21-year-old new comer, Borges, has upstaged the modelling industry as the most sought after cat-walker in Africa today.
