You Would Be Mad To Believe Queen Charlotte Bridgeton Could Have Been A Black Woman

The Queen Charlotte Netflix show has raised concerns, by acknowledging the Charlotte was a black woman. The movie depicts a young queen’s marriage to King George of England ushers in a love story and transforms high society.

Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was Queen of Great Britain and of Ireland as the wife of King George III from their marriage on 8 September 1761 until her death in 1818. Both kingdoms were in a personal union under George until the Acts of Union 1800 merged them on 1 January 1801.

Netflix is most likely celebrating the launch in Africa based on some elusive claims that the queen was somewhat black due to having North African heritage. The acknowledgment that Charlotte Bridgeton being black is based on the claims made by historian Mario De Valdes y Cocom has linked her to a 15th-century Portuguese noblewoman with North African roots.

Now you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to know most North Africans, since the invasion of the Arabs, look nothing like black people and don’t even identify as such.

That is 3 centuries (300 years) before her birth. 300 years of white lineage erasing out that particular ‘North African/Arab’ blood. Even before that particular parent married a German, giving birth to Queen Charlotte. Anyone who believes she was a black woman is absolutely mad.

In fact, the initial claims of her potentially being black according to Wikipedia, originated with writer J. A. Rogers’s 1940 book Sex and Race: Volume I, in which he concluded that the queen must have had a “Negro strain” based on what he described as her “broad nostrils and heavy lips” in her portrait by Allan Ramsay, and a quote by Horace Walpole describing her “nostrils spreading too wide; mouth has the same fault”. These details gave rise to much later claims that the queen was “mixed-race”, “biracial”, or “black”.

In other words, not even her skin tone indicated she was black, simply her broad nose and lips inspired a writer to assume she had black blood. And based on this one assumption, a whole line of writers altered reality.

Not only is this a fallacy, But the real Regency Era from 1811 to 1820 was nowhere near as diverse as the shows have reimagined.

Slavery wasn’t yet abolished in England until 1833, and people of color were relegated to domestic work and field. Let alone a black woman taken the oath as a queen. New renditions and edits of previous paintings the lady are being published by mainstream media platforms to rewrite this history.

It’s all part of the race-swapping mirage executed by Hollywood that continues to stir up racial tension and an erosion of real history. With that said Africans need to stop trying to glorify themselves in other people’s shoes, learn their own history, bring it to light, and be proud of it.
