Unlike the transition from 2019 to 2020, we are not seeing much of the ‘Next year (2021) is my year’ talk. It seems like 2020 taught us all a lesson that sometimes it gets better and sometimes it gets worst. Never the less, 2020 was an amazing year for trends.

It seems the lockdown gave style influencers, designers, and creatives more time to meditate on their designs and style and the number of trends that were born in the Summer Harmattan end of the year are countless. In fact, the number of trends born during the worldwide lockdown itself was in itself jaw-dropping, such as the unforgettable pillow challenge.

Look Forward to The Pleat Trend

One trend that can be forecasted for 2021 is definitely the pleat trend. A pleat is a type of fold formed by doubling fabric back upon itself and securing it in place. It is commonly used in clothing and upholstery to gather a wide piece of fabric to a narrower circumference.

Pleats are not new but according to our black and African style influencers, they definitely shouldn’t be overlooked in the year 2021. Unfortunately working pleats with prints will be somewhat of a clash due to the striped nature of the design.

However, they do express an amazing result with glossy fabrics, especially when given enough room to flair. Our last #fGSTYLE article looked at the African prints to end 2020 with as seen below.
