Legendary US Gymnastics superstar, Simone Biles withdrew from the individual all-around event and will not be able to defend her Olympic title.
The four-time gold medal winner and current champion made the decision not to compete in Thursday’s finals after consulting with Team US officials following her dismal withdrawal from the team competition on Tuesday July 27.
Biles removed herself from the team final following one rotation, citing her mental health struggles as the reason for her shock exit. She also stated that she wanted to prioritize her own ‘wellbeing’ while insisting ‘there is more to life than just gymnastics’.
Ever since, she has received many accusations claiming she is intentionally holding back, with words like bluffing, attitude and disrespectful used to describe her choice.
Controversial TV host and pundit, Piers Morgan has questioned US gymnast Simone Biles, calling it ‘a joke’
“Are ‘mental health issues’ now the go-to excuse for any poor performance in elite sport? What a joke,” Morgan tweeted.
“Just admit you did badly, made mistakes, and will strive to do better next time. Kids need strong role models not this nonsense.”
However, a few people criticized Morgan’s tweets, stating that such statement pushes people with mental health problems to remain silent.
An internet fan of Simone Biles by the name of Terry AesopThutmose III called on the public to help her out.
He stated. “We seriously need to protect Simone Biles, because they are doing to her what they did to Gabby Douglas. Yes she was the previous gold medalist, but she is allowed to have a off day (if “off” means she’s still in first place), she is allowed to not smile and be visually frustrated, she’s allowed to ignore post round interviews. And yet these commentators are talking about this being a huge “disaster” and making comments on her physical appearance”
