When we utter the word Mozambique, visualize an outstanding tropical climate over an extensive coastline. Mozambique might be one of Africa’s poorest countries, however, this hidden gem boasts over 2,500 kilometers (1,553 miles) of unspoiled coastline, brimming with pristine beaches and tropical offshore islands. The capital of Mozambique, Maputo has become the main plateau and a hot spot for attracting for designers, models, celebrities, and stylish people. This has orchestrated the growth of various fashion event organizations such as Fancy Mozambique.

Fancy Mozambique Bringing Culture To The Forefront

Fancy Mozambique is an event that celebrates the fashion and culture of the nation. Their event features a range of creative manifestations, from fashion workshops to television debates, and a large fashion show of various national and international stylists.

On the 4th of February 2023, the organization held a fabulous swimwear Summer edition of the event dubbed Fancy Summer. Being the exotic nature of Mupato, the range of outfits catered for a host of beach activities such as swimming, diving, and surfing, and sun-orientated activities, such as sunbathing. However, resort fashion seemed to be the primary choice for the designers on board.

The show was hosted by the eccentric Annikie Rabohlale whilst guests were treated to cocktails and beverages by Água VUMBA. The event also focused on sustainability with the aim of creating for the public to interact with the idea of ​​recycling used clothing. According to the organization….

“Consumption of textiles has the fourth largest negative impact on the environment and climate change. The fashion industry, according to data from the UN, is valued at around 2.4 trillion dollars and employs more than 75 million people worldwide. The impressive data is that about 500 billion dollars are lost a year with the disposal of clothes that go straight to landfills and dumps and are not even recycled.”

With the intent to use their platform to work against this, Fancy Mozambique sourced a number of designers that recycle and encouraged brands to also work on recylced outfits for the Fancy Summer event. The participating designers included Evelyne Ndizeye, Jerry Pholo, Tchida Rabeca, Estilista Ramadan, Angelica Miranda, Stela Alves, Gift Goodson, Neusa Chuzuaio, and more.

The state of Mozambique fashion is still yet to become a global sensation, or atleast make it’s mark on the African continent. With its primary show being Mozambique Fashion Week for decades, organizations like Fancy Mozambique are emitting an expansion to the appreciation of the Southern nations creativity.

As far as fashion goes, the country has some cultural gems that could possible dominate cultural trends. For example the capulana, which is a type of a sarong worn primarily in Mozambique but also in other areas of south-eastern Africa. It is a length of material about 2 metres by 1 metre.
