Share FacebookTwitterPinterestLinkedinWhatsappTelegramEmail 10.6K After a successful peaceful protest on 21st – 23rd december 2024, raising awareness about illegal mining in Ghana—popularly known as galamsey—concerns continue to grow over the pollution of the country’s waters. Health experts have repeatedly warned that contaminated water sources caused by galamsey pose severe long-term health risks, including the spread of waterborne diseases and increased exposure to harmful chemicals like mercury. Despite this, the issue remains largely unresolved. Political candidate Nana Kwame Bediako, aka Cheddar a fancy dressing celebrity, high profile event attending millionaire, who is running for president, has stirred controversy with his comments on the protest. Without presenting any evidence, Cheddar accused the protestors of being violent, saying, “Violence—I don’t believe in it. Whatever you guys are doing, protesting and all of this, I can’t support you!” Everyone has the right to make their voices heard through peaceful protest. Violence only takes us further from the change we seek. Let’s stand together and push for progress with respect and unity. pic.twitter.com/qymf1Ccs5p — Nana Kwame Bediako (@OsagyefoNKB) September 24, 2024 His remarks were met with swift backlash, as many felt his comments were not only out of touch but also dismissive of the real issues at hand. Critics were particularly upset that he failed to address the root issue of galamsey or criticize the police for the brutalization and illegal arrests of peaceful protestors, instead choosing to falsely accuse them of violence. Cheddar’s Twitter timeline quickly filled with angry responses from disgruntled citizens, questioning his priorities and sincerity. What happened next may have marked the downfall of his political career. In an attempt to defend his stance, Cheddar posted a video from a luxury car, doubling down on his comments in a clip titled, “I Stand by My Words. Peace Over Violence.” In the video, Cheddar tried to clarify his earlier remarks, saying, “First of all, let me use this to correct the situation about my last video where I said I don’t support violence—and I still stand on that.” Seated in his luxury vehicle, he reiterated that his opposition to the protest was rooted in his desire for peace in the country. He further insinuated that the protests were being funded by political opposition, suggesting that this, rather than genuine public outrage, was the real motive behind the demonstrations. Shockingly, he once again avoided addressing the galamsey issue directly or condemning the violence inflicted upon the protestors. I stand by my words. Peace over violence. pic.twitter.com/LPSQTaQWx9 — Nana Kwame Bediako (@OsagyefoNKB) September 25, 2024 The public reaction was swift and unforgiving. Ghanaians from all corners of social media rushed to express their disappointment and anger. Cheddar, once seen as a refreshing alternative to Ghana’s two-party political system and a potential voice for the struggles of the average citizen, saw his image crumble almost overnight. The perception that he was unsympathetic to the plight of ordinary Ghanaians and more focused on protecting his own interests left many disillusioned, with a flood of insults and criticisms pouring in across platforms. Even one of his biggest supporters and hype men Bongo Ideas who many criticized for assuming he was taking money from Cheddar came out to set him straight on twitter. While you said that, you should have also advocated for the citizens to be freed. You should have called for the pregnant woman and other vulnerable individuals illegally arrested to be let go. That is how it should be done. Your posture comes across as though you're against the… — Albert Nat Hyde ™ (@1BongoIdeas) September 25, 2024 It remains to be seen if Cheddar can recover from this political misstep, but for now, his once-promising campaign seems to be facing an uphill battle.
