Ghanaian fashion brand, Pelliguen, has revealed its intention to take over as a leading commercial fashion clothing producer in Africa. The brand has highlighted the need to create diversity in African fashion that will compete in global trends.
Guests at Accra Fashion Week had their jaws dropped when they witnessed an outstanding denim collection hit the runway at the Circle Dubai. The detailed collection show Jeans with chains hooked to it, touching on many of the trendiest details spotted on style influencers across the world.
One motivation for Pelliguen is to create a reminder of the late ‘90s and early 2000s when Denim Jeans outfits such as jumpers were the order of the day. However, the brand is well aware of climate changes that have seen the world’s overall temperature go high up, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. In order to parallel this change in climate, Pelliguen used denim (jeans) fabrics that are less heavy and thick.
Denim is a strong cotton fabric made from a twill weave invented in the 1870s by Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss, the same Levi who founded Levi’s Jeans. Authentic denim is made with cotton. You need 100% cotton in your denim to provide that perfect texture: cotton denim is durable yet will mold to your body with each wear, meaning your denim jeans will be made uniquely your own every time you pull them on.
Creative director Abena Sintime behind Pelliguen believed there was a middle ground to find and execute a very easy-to-maintain set of clothes that will be perfect for the local Ghanaian in the warm weather as well as appealing to the international audience. You may want to go against your instinct to keep it looking new. But true denim should be worn in so it can mold to your form, get softer, and cultivate its own personality.
When it comes to your jeans, less is more. Jeans only need to be washed, at most, once every five wears (not five years). When asked if the brand has more denim in store for its future patronizers, Abena Sintim replied “There’s nothing in the plan for using denim again. We may or may not, we are here to satisfy the stylish end of society and denim and silver chains felt right for this collection, but itas we prepare for the next there is no telling we will apply it again”
