She tagged it: “Never be defined by your past… It was just a lesson, not a life sentence. Feels good to be back!!! Black don’t crack. #backtoblack #missedmymelanin #stillbeautiful #blackbarbie.” But a number of people called her out and accused her of editing her photo to look black. Some told her she’s mocking God by easily switching colors back and forth. Some said she can no longer afford the expensive bleaching cream. But after years of critisizing bleaching and the falsehood of beauty that has turned a lot of ladies astray, Vera Sidika just pulled a very bold move. And yes we do not want to give any credence to the aspect of bleaching, but to emerge out of it and embrace your natural tone and share proud hashtag, her act might just be the most powerful act to turn other potential bleachers away from doing so. Vera Sidika story should be held up high. Publications and media would need to expose her story more and the world should be able to feed of her reasons for bleaching, her experiences as a bleacher, and what made her have the courage or encouraged her to return. This praise needs to be carefully done so bleachers don’t think we are going on a praise spree but looking in the best ways to avoid it and push the aspects that she experienced to make her return to her original colour or denounce it.
