Ghana Model Stories
There is a new kid on the block and his name is Ottawaa. And this new kid has recently done what all the old kids could only dream off, and that is he recently walked for Louis Vuitton at Paris Mens Fashion Week. Although he was nominated for FashionGHANA’s Honors & Awards 2018, it seems he might not be so well known in Ghana and here is why.
In Ghana, we haven’t yet or might never adopt the skinny male models as a representation or atleast the majority of models on the runway, neither have we fully embraced quirky faces especially in the field of male models, leaving Ottawaa to pass right under the radar as a male model with potential. However, this is the growing definition of a top model in Europe and Ottawa fitted just perfectly amongst others.
Less we forget, this is also the first collection by British-Ghanaian, Virgil Abloh who become the first black creative Director to showcase a collection for LOUIS VUITTON, for his Spring Summer Men’s Wear collection.
In recent years we have seen numerous African models fly abroad to participate in mainstream shows, and with the exception of a few, they maintain a short lived career. Much due to the fact the foot their own costly travel bills, and offer themselves to top designers for free with the hopes of further jobs to roll on. And when it doesn’t they are left with massive debt. And the once ‘next big thing’ becomes ‘out of sight out of mind’. Let’s hope this will not be the case with the new kid. We wish him all the best.
