Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce Breaks 100m Record In Her Natural Hair After Insults From Ghanaian Natural Hair Advocate

A few weeks ago, a natural hair advocate in Ghana by the name of Serwaa Ampaafo went viral in Jamaica after insulting their 100m athletes for what she termed as ‘hideous’ wigs that they were spotted running it.

The athletes being insulted in particular included Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce who was spotted in a green wig. Although not many people in Ghana were even aware of her words and comments, Serwaa had gone extremely viral in Jamaica receiving insults and threats for her comments. Read below.

FashionGHANA.com took an alternative approach to the matter, questioning the fact that Shelly deserved such a barrage of insults, but praising the fact that at least it brought the question of natural hair into the limelight.

And in spite of that, it is true, and sometimes there are different methods that work for different people. The attacks on Shelly became national news in Jamaica and worldwide (once again despite the fact that Ghanaians were not aware of this as such).

It wasn’t the first time she had been questioned regarding her choice of wigs. The runner back in 2019 had replied to such backlashes stating “wearing colored wigs when I compete does not mean I am ashamed of my African heritage.” Fraser-Pryce’s hair color was as much a talking point as her gold medal performance at the 2019 World Championships.

It seems the rejection of the colored wigs has finally sunk it. Is it right for Shelly to be bullied into submission for a particular type of look? Definitely not, however, is not just a public figure, but a public champion and taking the oath to represent a country, then there is no doubt public opinions will be unleashed regarding anything that you do.

Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce proved that she is a winner in both her colored wigs as well as her natural hair looks. The five-time world 100m champion, 35, bettered her own mark for the fastest 100m of the year, having clocked 10.66 seconds in Poland on Saturday.

She has now run the third and fourth-fastest women’s 100m times ever. And she executed it with crossed braids to the back. (Disclaimer: braids are usually not natural hair but placed in the category when casually speaking about black natural hairstyle because they are unique to black women and do not emulate non-African women with weaves or perms.)

Shelly once again made Jamaica proud by breaking her 100m record and made African women as a whole even more proud by inspiring young girls to be themselves in their natural looks. However, we just hope all her dectractors that raised articles about her wigs, will also be quick to acknowledge her natural hair efforts to ensure we are part of sending the message. Otherwise all we are doing is becoming part of the problem by tearing each other up pointlessly. So lets hope Serwaa Ampaafo acknowledges this to.
