Was Solange Knowles SNL ‘Crowe Braids’ Hair Style Really Influenced By The Congolese

There is a lot of noise about the amazing hair style Solange Knowles rocked on her Saturday night live performance. In fact some of the information that dominated the press was how long it takes to make the hair, which apparently was approximately 40 hours.

The hair style went viral within seconds and all credits in public for creativity goes to hairstylists Shani Crowe @crowezilla, who did not only braided Solange’s hair but also braided and beaded the elaborate piece especially for the performance, which was attached to Solange’s hair at the back.

But the question lies, was it total creativity or was the style influenced by 19th century images from Zaire, Congo.

There is very little different in look with the exception of the placement of the rings and the fact that you will not get Solange to sit for 40 hours doing her hair so it had to be attached as a pony tail.

As at now, the hairdo publicized the hairstyle as Crowe braids, and she deserves to be acknowledged for the amazing style inspired or not inspired by another. However, as much as there is nothing new under the sun, it always shows great work man ship to give credit when influences and inspiration are adapted.

So we look forward to finding out where the origins of Solange’s hairstyle lies and acknowledged if from the Congo, as Solange rocking it is a big platform to those of Zaire. And we are totally open to the chance she might have conceptualized it by herself.
