The Brazilian-born designer was raised between Côte-d’Ivoire and the United States, allowing her to fully develop her own unique aesthetic and embrace her multiculturalism through her garments. Each piece of clothing is produced in a small manufacturing workshop in Côte-d’Ivoire where Maléombho is able to hire and empower young women from unfavorable backgrounds. Her ties to the West African country can also be seen in the details—locally manufactured indigo-dyed fabrics, jewelry, shoes, and accessories. In an effort to overcome frustrations toward the United States judiciary system’s discriminative actions against Africans Americans and frustrations towards class, race, religious, sexuality, and cultural stereotypes, Maléombho is taking a stand through Instagram. With an array of socially conscious selfies entitled “Alien Edits,” the designer is able to draw attention to the alienation these victims of discrimination endure while empowering her generation with uplifting messages of pride, grace, empathy, and compassion.
