BUYU BY JAMHURI WEAR Jamhuri Wear’s new travel range, “Buyu by Jamhuri Wear”, is named after the fruit produced by the Baobab tree. The collection is 100% handcrafted in Kenya, using repurposed bark fiber sustainably harvested from the aptly named “Tree of Life”, fused perfectly with natural tan leather. This extension of Jamhuri Wear embodies the cycle of life and celebrates the co-existence of humans with nature. 100% HAND WOVEN IN KENYA Bark fiber from a the Baobab tree is laboriously woven by hand using age-old techniques, passed on from mother to daughter for generations, by a local women’s group in Tseikuru, 500 kms from the capital city of Nairobi. The woven material is then combined with leather at our workshop in Karen, Nairobi to create this luxurious handmade travel range. THE “KIONDO” COLLECTION Traditionally, this weaving practice is used to create market bags called “Kiondo”. By combining the workmanship of a traditional craft with refined pullback leather, Jamhuri Wear has created a premium collection of classic sustainable travel bags. Each bag is a bespoke variation comprised of a one-of-a-kind woven pattern + unrivaled attention to detail + stellar craftsmanship. This capsule trio consists of a: 1) Weekender Duffle, 2) iPad Soft Case, and 3) Catch-All Pouch. HERITAGE RICH ”We are proud to have evolved, design-wise, an everyday cultural piece that our mothers, sisters and women for generations have used to carry market produce in. We transformed a bulky tote into a premium high-end product that can function in a modern context. We’re so proud to share this worldwide.” says Founder and Creative Director, Kimathi. SHOP GOOD, DO GOOD, FEEL GOOD Jamhuri Wear believes that style is substance, not only as a vehicle to look good but to do good as well. The Buyu travel range aims to create a global market for this age old weaving technique, thereby putting the power of opportunity into the hands of local women community weavers in Kenya. A portion of proceeds from the Buyu range will be used to urgently build a new kitchen for the Mothers Love Outreach program in Gikuni, Kenya.
