Never did citizens of Accra ever visualize the contribution of Northern culture in their day-to-day garments as that of which fashion brand SmockyWorld is infusing. Multiple award-winning founder and CEO of SmockyWorld, Gertrude Kunde-Kwallinjam, has executed her position as visionary to change the narrative of style, fashion, and culture in Ghana and beyond. She did so by taking Northern traditional wear and assembling a more fashionable outcome via her contemporary brand.
Evening gowns flattered with fascinators have long curated SmockyWorlds outdoored collections, conveyed on Accra Fashion Week’s long-legged decorated models. However, 2021 manifested a new orchestration by the brand unexpected by their regular observers and patronizers.
The renowned fashion brand showcased 2 collections, both of which deviated from the aesthetic of the SmockyWorld identity. The 2021 Paypecker Accra Fashion Week witnessed the brand launch a set of casual ready-to-wear clothes merging the smock fabric with eccentric ready-to-wear styles that dominated the fashion scene in 2021 as seen below.
Another captivating collection that made history on the Accra Fashion Week runway was the new bridal line, with a jaw-dropping gown collection unleashed by the Smockyworld brand.
In previous shows, Gertrude had always expressed her appreciation for Bridal wear, with one or two wedding gowns in the mix of her extravagant designs, just as she did in the 2019 Summer/Harmattan, Accra Fashion Week runway.
but never did the Ghanaian nation expect to see a full collection of bridal wear, each with its distinctive design and jewelry complimenting its composition.
SmockyWorld may just be the leading force behind a revolution of Smock-filled bridal designs we are soon yet to see emerge in Ghana as has been done with much of the kente fabrics.
But their objective is not to simply to get a piece of the matrimonial funds, but the passion to ensure that a ceremoney as dear to their clients as a wedding embraces any of their said preferences even if that is smock fabrics.
Models of various sizes and heights turned the runway into an isle on the even of December 11th, presenting astonishing designs from their new bridal line, SmockyWorld bridals.
When speaking to Gertrude she stated “Its very necessary for us to have SmockyWorld Bridal” as she undressed the models who were eager to exhibit designers showcasing after hers “Had a brand come up with fusing our northern culture with bridal wear when I got married, it would have been my first choice for a wedding gown”.
The essence of having SmockyWorld bridals could just play an essential role in bridal wear in the northern region. However, a goal would be to see it heavily embraced in the very busy town of Accra flooded with wedding ceremonies every week.
According to Gertrude, she always had doubts about launching SmockyWorld Bridals, due to the uncertainty of people wanting smock fused bridal gowns, however, after overcoming the fright she is ready to make her wedding gowns a trend. See more of the designs below.
