The collection was a way for the young budding designer to pay respects to ‘the women who always get him through’. Amongst the stylish clothes, Magugu also outdoors a new shoe, which was the pointed kitten heel boot, his second pair to date. The show is named ‘After Tears’, an ode to South Africa’s customary post-funeral tradition. On his social media post, the designer captioned “I am so proud to present my SS22 GENEALOGY collection; a journey that has been quite cathartic. I admittedly have been quite miserable. It’s impossible to ignore what is peak ‘weltschmerz’ and, as creative people, we tend to subconsciously transcribe whatever hangs in the air into output. This season, I wanted to disengage with mounting pressures of having to create work that considers and reflects the times and to create a personal body of work that – even if niche – looks inwards at the part of my life that always gets me through: my family. Thank you to the sheer grace of Iris and Esther Magugu, the brilliant crew and inspiring cast. And thank you all for joining us this season.” See the images and video below.
