Fast rising South African Designer and brand Thebe Magugu debuted his Genealogy collection during Paris Fashion Week. Thebe Magugu is a contemporary South African fashion brand primarily operating within the field of women’s ready to wear, while having a firm footing in South African tradition.
The collection is titled Genealogy and is very relative to the pieces and looks that were presented. The collection taps into urban South Africa reflected back in the 70s and 80s, with each and every look being a modern contemporary edit of old family images.
the 2019 LVMH Prize winner ousted his family lineage for inspiration, tapping into ultra-modern revisions of historical styles adorned by his family of which each look was presented on. Due to this, we see Geles, puff sleeves, pleated skirts, Wraps, and various colors emulating classical images of the very stylish family member.
The designer published a round table discussion with his mother Iris Magugu and his aunt Esther Magugu and they browsed through old family photos that highlighted cherished moments and memories of their lives.
The collection was a way for the young budding designer to pay respects to ‘the women who always get him through’. Amongst the stylish clothes, Magugu also outdoors a new shoe, which was the pointed kitten heel boot, his second pair to date. The show is named ‘After Tears’, an ode to South Africa’s customary post-funeral tradition.
On his social media post, the designer captioned “I am so proud to present my SS22 GENEALOGY collection; a journey that has been quite cathartic. I admittedly have been quite miserable. It’s impossible to ignore what is peak ‘weltschmerz’ and, as creative people, we tend to subconsciously transcribe whatever hangs in the air into output. This season, I wanted to disengage with mounting pressures of having to create work that considers and reflects the times and to create a personal body of work that – even if niche – looks inwards at the part of my life that always gets me through: my family.
Thank you to the sheer grace of Iris and Esther Magugu, the brilliant crew and inspiring cast. And thank you all for joining us this season.”

UPCOMING TOP EVENTS!
Ghana’s leading fashion event Accra Fashion Week is scheduled for 7-11 December 2022 following their 5th-year celebration last year in 2021. Accra Fashion Week is a platform for African designers that can be compared to fashion weeks across the major capitals. It aims to fill the void which sees tremendous creativity and culture across the continent with the absence of an operating fashion infrastructure.
The epic event took place at Ghana Dubai in Accra, and saw models march down the steps from the Kwame Nkrumah Monument whilst being followed by a spotlight, before circulating the central fountains. Memories of the exciting night still give chills as guests revisit the experience on youtube.
However, rest assured that 2022 is going to be even more exciting with greater performances and an upgraded designer collection. FashionGHANA.com is sure to bring you the exclusives we did on www.FashionGHANA.com/TV. All last year’s shows are available to watch on youtube. Designer’s registration is ongoing on the AccraFashionWeek.org website.
As we embark on another year of celebrating African culture, our theme for 2022 is “Afrofuturism.” This term was created to explore the developing intersection of cultural aesthetic, philosophy of science, and philosophy of history as it relates to the African Diaspora. During this year’s events, Afrochella will bring “Afrofuturism” to life through fashion, food, art and music. In 2019, the African Diaspora returned home to the continent for the “Year of Return.” This year, we will explore the endless possibilities of what “Afrofuturism” could look like in 2022 and beyond.
