The Malawian fashion industry is gearing up for the first-ever Malawi Fashion Week, which, the organizers have announced will take place between May 30 and June 3 at Umodzi Park.
Scores of Malawian designers joined by their international counterparts will be at the event to showcase Malawi’s fashion industry, and to display their latest collections.
Hastings Kimpho Loka, Malawi Fashion Weeks public relations manager said, “Dates have been set. It’s May 30, which is registration day to June 3. Already over 40 designers have expressed interest to take part and more are still registering. We want each designer to have 10 outfits to showcase, and as well as local models, we will also have foreign models from Zambia, Mozambique, Botswana and South Africa,”
Arrangements have been made to work closely with Africa Fashion International (AFI) to add color to the Malawi Fashion Week. Apart from the catwalk shows and displays there will also be several seminars in fashion theory and practices. Shop owners in fashion products, fashion accessories, and many more will also be accorded the chance to have their stalls within the entrance,” he said.
Organizers have since disclosed that they are also putting together a magazine that will cover fashion-related events in Malawi where designers, vendors, shop owners, fashion writers will be interviewed.
“For example, the likes of Lucy Kwengwere, Rose Kaleke and Dawa Loga-Lemberger, models and many others that contribute to Malawi’s fashion industry are likely to feature in the magazine. The magazine will be out before the Fashion Week”.
